THE AUCKLAND HOSPITAL

What Dr. Panting, of Australia, said at Wellington last week, that "he was particularly interested in looking through the Auckland Hospital, which had quite a reputation in Australia for its modern organisation," was a tribute to a long aud successful period of wise co-operation between the board and the medical staff. Dr. C. E. Maguire and Dr. A. N. McKelvey, whose names have been given to two wards at the Infirmary, were conscientious and painstaking administrators, who for long years did much by their tact and wisdom J .o foster the team spirit, so that organisation reached a very high standard. Board members were invited to clinical demonstrations at the hospital, lasting very often well into midnight, and the medical staff met members in conference in the board room very frequently. A fine traditional hospital spirit seemed to permeate the whole system so that "the fame of its fine modern organisation," as stated by Dr. Panting, travelled far across the seas to other countries. As a former board member let me* say to the medical and nursing staffs that Christmastide is the time of the year when thousands upon thousands of men, women and children who have passed through the hospital wards have memory stirred with a deeper regard and thankfulness for the skilled attention so freely and unselfishlv given to them, sometimes for a very long period, which is fuller, more sincere and more human than any other tribute which could be paid to them. At the back of it all it is also felt that there is the resourcefulness of an efficient administration doing its part well. W. K. Howitt.
