MUTUAL TRADE
GERMANY AND ITALY NEW AGREEMENTS SIGNED BARTER TO CONTINUE PAST BENEFIT CIATMF.T) i By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received December 20, 10 p.m.) LONDON, Doc. 20 A Rome states that the Italian Foreign Minister, Count Ciano, and the German Ambassador signed various Italo-German economic agreements. The Rome correspondent of the Times says the agreements provide for the application in 1938 of the existing barter arrangements to enable both countries to be independent of ordinary sources of imports. Italy will purchase as much as possible of coal, iron and mechanical goods from Germany, which will take as far as possible fruit, vegetables, artificial fibres and agricultural produce from Italy. It is claimed that the operation of the agreements in 1937 resulted in a substantial increase of mutual trade. Italy imported 6,150,000,000 tons of coal from Germany. The Rome correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says the measures are intended to reduce the balance of trade in Germany's favour, which was £6,000.000 in the first seven months of 1937. It has since been considerably increased.
