LIFE IN JERSEY
INCOME TAX A TRIFLE "Jersey is probably the wealthiest part of the Empire," said Mrs. F. A. Stevens, of Hamilton, who arrived at Auckland yesterday by the Awatea with her husband. During her stay in England Mrs. Stevens spent 10 weeks in Jersey with her parents, Judge and Madame Aubin. "With a population of 50,000, Jersey has over 100,000 visitors in one season. Income tax is 6d in the pound and death duties are nil," said Mrs. Stevens.
Making London her headquarters, Mrs. Stevens spent some time touring in England. She was particularly impressed, however, with the huge blocks of flats being built in London. A circle of flats in a four-mile radius of the city was in the process of construction and each block contained about 400 flats. Mrs. Stevens also visited France and Belgium. In France, the battlefields of the Great War were completelv built over.
