TWO BOOKMAKERS
BOTH ADMIT CHARGES FINES OF £25 IMPOSED Charged separately with carrying on the business of bookmakers, Alfred Drinnan, labourer, aged 40 (Mr. Schramm), arid Clement Victor McManemin, stable hand, aged 45 (Mr. Terry), pleaded guilty when they appeared before Mr. 1?. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said Drinnan operated in two hotels. W hen he was arrested on Saturday he had equipment for doubles and ordinary betting and £33 in his possession. He was a married man, and it was his first offence. - Mr. Schramm said accused had been in business only a short time. Some of the money belonged to his wife. A fine of £25 and costs was imposed. Detective-Sergeant McHugh, referring to McManemin, said the accused operated in a hotel, and had records of ordinary betting and doubles and trebles in his possession when arrested. He had £9 18s 6d in cash. Mr. Terry said the accused was in business in- a small way, receiving a little commission. He was unable to do hard /work, as he was suffering from malignant malaria and a weak heart. He had spent four yeaxs. at the, war, and had received a pension for some time, but it was no longer paid. A fine of £25 and costs was imposed, 24 hours being allowed for payment.
