LIGHTING AGREEMENTS FURTHER RELIEF WORKS At a meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council last night a letter was rtad from the Auditor-Genera) in which he intimated that he had been advised that the action of the council in entering intp an agreement with the | Power Board for community lighting was ultra vires. He pointed out that 1 as a number of other local authorities had entered into similar agreements; with the board, the latter had been advised of the position and it was sug- I gfcsted that in order to validate those agreements and to provide for similar actions in the future, validating and empowering legislation should be j •ought. , . , i The Mayor, Mr. J. Park, mentioned that this was the first instance in New j Zealand where/ the necessity for such , agreements had arisen. Fortunately, he ; ®?id, the Onehunga council had not i signed, although many other local authorities had done so. On his motion ; it nas decided to postpone signing the; agreement until after the passage of •rapowering legislation. The approval of the Labour Department was given to further relief, works for the employment of 56 men until the Christmas holidays and the engagement of a maximum of 88 fit married men for a period of four months from Jsauarv 10. An additional commitment «f £64:12 for these purposes has" been allotted, the works for prosecution under the authority being the dismantling of several old buildings, the '•grading of several roads, sealing a number of streets, and the improvement of the bathing facilities on the foreshore. , , The Auckland' Hospital Board notified that the question of appointing a district nurse for Onehunga was under consideration and a request was made for the opinions of local medical and social workers. Ihe Mavor said that three of the four medical men in Onehunga strongly recommended _ the wtablishment of a resident district nwse in the borough and a recommendation to that effect was carried.
