ANIMAL WELFARE

HUNT MEMBERS' INTEREST FUNCTION AT EAST TAMAKI Lovers of horses and those interested in animal welfare were present in large numbers at the annual juvenile gymkhana held at East Tamaki on Saturday under the patronage of the Pakuranga Hunt. Apart from the highly commendable object of raising funds for the work of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the fostering of the care of animals among the youth of the Auckland district, patrons of the function were treated to an entertaining programme of events arranged by the huntsman, Mr. P. H. Smith, and Mrs. Smith, who acts as honorary secretary for the voluntary organisation. The success of the day was due in no small measure to tho excellent work of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, who initiated the movement in 1928, and their efforts were publicly commended by the master of the hunt, Mr. H. Bullock Webster and tho president of tho S.P.C.A., Mr. R. Spencer Mason. / Among the many youthful riders were the children of Their Excellencies the Governor-General, Viscount Galway, and Viscountess Galway, tho Hons. Cecilia, Isobel, Mary and tho Hon. Simon Monckton-Arundell. They competed with success in the events and displayed a line sense of horsemanship. Lady Galway was a keen spectator and in presenting the trophies she complimented the riders on their splendid showing. A silent worker which was the centre of considerable interest was a docile Great Dane, carrying on its back a collection box bearing the blue cross symbol of animal welfare.
