TRAINING BUS DRIVERS

RIGOURS OF LONDON [from our own correspondent] LONDON. Nov. 27 A new training ground for bus drivers has been opened in London. A feature is a skid patch, on which the drivers have to "graduate." This is a circular area, 40 yards in diameter, thickly coated with grease and soft soap. The area is cluttered with traffic lights, islands, and even automatic policemen, in an attempt to reproduce all the nightmare of Central London streets. The tests are so exacting that last year out of 3000 men trained less than 600 became regular drivers. The training period is 30 days, and no man is accepted as a trainee unless ho has had two years' driving experience on heavy vehicles in the London area. The result of such strictness is to bo found in the remarkable freedom from accidents enjoyed by London's 12,000 bus drivers, who carry passengers over about 200,000,000 miles in a year.
