THE SANDERS CUP

FIRST TBIAL DECIDED AILEEN BEATS ENDEAVOUR MARGIN OF FIVE SECONDS The first of a series of trial races to decide the boat and crew to represent Auckland in the annual contest for the Sanders Cup for 14ft. Jellicoo boats took place on Saturday afternoon and resulted in a win for Aileeu, which defeated Endeavour by the narrow margin of five seconds. The competitors were Iron Duke (X. Dunsford), Aileen (R. H. Auger) and Endeavour (VV. Parkes). All the boats carried three hands. The course was from starting line off King's Wharf, round Resolution buoy, round Sanuspit beacon back to starting line; twice round. A light northerly breeze was experienced for' the greater part of the race, but toward the finish the wind went round to the south. On the signal to start Aileen crossed tlx; lino a bowsprit ahead of Endeavour and- 35 seconds later camo Iron Duke. It, was a lead.to-the eastern tide deflector, a run to Resolution buoy, a beat to Sandspit and a broad lead hack to King's Wharf. Endeavour passed Aileen immediately after the siart and at the Resolution buoy she was tin L'Os ahead of Aileen, which led Iron Duke by tun 255. On the next leg of the course Aileen ,niado up a fair amount of leeway, reducing Endeavour's lead at the Sandspit to 298. 'lron Duke also improved her position, making the turn at the Sandspit <im 40s astern of Aileen. Ou the run up to King's Wharf Endeavour again drew away from Aileen. The timed on the completion or the first round were:—Endeavour. .'lll 30m 19s; Aileen, 3h 38m 38s; Iron Duke, 3h Kim 'its. Endeavour continued her-lead in the second round • and when Resolution buoy was readied the rounding times wero:—Endeavour, -ih 10m 495; Aileen, 111 12m 325; Iron Duke, 4h 28in ss.' At this stage the wind shifted to the south and when the Sandspit beacon was rounded Endeavour was leading Aileen by lm -lHs. Iron Duke followed 12m 59s later. On the last leg up the harbour Aileen gradually gained on Endeavour, but it was not until the last 100 yards wero sailed that Aileen caught and passed her rival. Endeavour tried to regain her lead, / but Aileen held on, crossing the line five- seconds ahead. The race started at 2.85 p.m. The finishing times were:—Aileen, 4n 40m 30s, 1; Endeavour, 4h 49in 355, 2; Iron Duke, 5h -tin 555. 3." Messrs. E. Culhane, G. Miller and G. M.
