HOLIDAY AT HOME
TRIPS ABANDONED ACCOMMODATION SHORTAGE DEMAND AT RESORTS Many Aucklandcrs will have to remain in the city over the Christmas and New Year holidays owing to their failure to make early arrangements for accommodation at popular seaside and tourist resorts. Many people, benefiting by unfortunate experience in past years, engaged rooms earlier in the year and tho remaining available accommodation at the more popular resorts has been rapidly booked up as intending liolidaymakcrs were informed of their definite holiday dates. While the number of Auckland residents who have made belated inquiries at the Government Tourist Bureau would not amount to 100, many others have done tho same through private channels. Several of the inquirers have been business men requiring a few days away from the city at Christmas and New Year. Since nearly all available accommodation has been reserved over that period at most of tho more popular -beaches, as far north as Bay of Islands, and as far south at Whakatane, their task has been difficult. There has also been a heavy demand for accommodation at such inland resorts as Hotorua, Wairakei and the Chateau Tongariro. The position ate Kotorua has been somewhat eased by the decision of some private householders to let rooms on a bed-and-brcakfast basis over the busy period. Advertisements show that a number of people wish to rent cottages at beaches close to the city, while others are seeking flats or furnished rooms. The fact that a large number of city residents will be obliged to remain in the city over the holiday period seems to indicate that increased accommodation is needed at some of the more popular resorts, such as Kotorua.
