An official said: "The fall of Nanking is expected within 24 hours. The Chinese have been fighting back most bitterly." The Cabinet Council has decided that even if Nanking falls the campaign will be continued. . * Despatches from Shanghai. state that the Japanese comsjander, General Matsui, has summoned the Nanking commander to surrender. The ultimatum will expire at noon to-morrow. 1 ®§|l General Matsui*s ultimatum was as follows: — The Japanese Army will be merciless toward resisters and* benevolent toward . those who are not hostile and toward the innocent populace. Nanking is the centre of civilisation in Eastern Asia, but cannot escape 'the havoc of war if its defenders persist in resisting the Japanese.
