QUEST FOR HOMES
AUCKLAND SHORTAGE MANY A VAIN SEARCH LARGE BONUSES OFFERED So acute is tlio house and flat shortage in Auckland that many people perking accommodation are offering substantial bonuses and other inducements to anyone assisting them to procure a dwelling. The offers are made not only to landlords and property agents but also to various tradesmen, including bakers, butchers and grocers, who may notice vacant houses during their rounds.
Rewards of £5 have been promised by numerous people who have advertised for dwellings recently while others have made the same offers to land agents. Many people have been willing to pay three months' rent in • advance to a landlord who can meet their needs and a few days ago a young married couple requiring a modern bungalow from February advertised that they were prepared to pay a year's rent in advance.
Numerous instances'* have occurred where tenants have been paid considerable sums to vacate residences in favour of new occupants.
