ENGLISH FOOTWEAR
IMPORTS BY DOMINION HIGH DUTY CONTEMPLATED (Received December 1, 5.30 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 1 The secretary of the National Federation of Boot and Shoe Manufacturers, Mr. G. I?. Colvin, states that the New Zealand Government has informed the British Government that it is contemplating increasing the duty on imported leather footwear for adults, or of imposing a duty and quota restrictions. Mr. Colvin says the New Zealand Government has expressed its willingness to accept representations by British manufacturers, who would put forward their case.
A definite promise of Government action to protect New Zealand secondary industries vyas made by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association on Monday evening. The Minister said; Every step it* has been possible for the Government to take by way of negotiation with overseas countries to give effect to the Government's promises of protection has been taken. We have communicated with the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, as it was necessary that we should get into t<such before final steps were taken in the matter of protection. It has been decided that the steps in the matter of footwear will be taken in reviewing other industries affected.
