NOVICE HORSES

SEVERAL IMPKOYERS

CLAUDELANDS CANDIDATES AXMINSTER AND CAVAN CHIEF

BY ABAYDOS

Axminster was not discredited when he filled fourth place at Auckland, and the three in front of him, Chili Bean, Bronze Queen and Adversity, have added further to their winnings. He is not likely to have much opposition in the Frankton Handicap at Claudelands on Saturday. Cavan Chief, on his first appearance at a meeting, scored two seconds at Awapuni. His victors, Adversity and Acora, were more seasoned. The Travis Axworthy horse should have tine prospects in his Claudelands engagements. lioma Girl lias shown improvement this teason, and, after a fourth at EpSom, she was twice placed at Thames. A little improvement should make her dangerous. Coining from a stable that recently produced two first winners, Adversity and Frankenstein, the well-bred Elsie Hamlyn will not lack supporters. Like her dam, Cornelian, slio may improve with experience. A Smart Filly "When she made her debut at the matinee meeting Xewpie's Queen attracted attention by her sound third behind Axminster and Blue Crest. Later she was runner-uu to Bexley Girl at Epsom. Sequoia has had 110 luck in the draw and has always struck large fields, but he should not go much longer without getting a wiiL While Kia Kalia generally has been disappointing, ho bits made some good showings 011 the Claudelands course. There is no doubt about his speed and the day ho goes evenly lie will take beating. Myrtle Oro is a smart maiden by Roy de Oro from the well-performed M'yrtlene. Wall Street in her only race since coming north shaped creditably. She has not been produced this season, but, if she js as good as reported, she will add interest to the Franklin Handicap. Tommy McElwyn has given a few useful displays and is one of the best beginners in the class. Ho will have to be reckoned with at a mile and a-quarter. Marcus has the speed, .but in his races he has shown a disinclination to leave the barrier. Ho may do better in saddle, although lie is giving away fivo seconds to compete. Ratepayer May Improve Having only his second race for 11. A. McMillan, Ratepayer displayed a turn of speed at Thames, but, through breaking at a critical stage, lie failed to get in the money. Ho is in the Stewards' Handicap. Nerihana has not raced since May, but his good showing when out of his class in saddle will not be overlooked. He begins smartly. Slight improvement on her Thames running would givo Worthy Quest a reasonably good chance. She is'well bal- J anced and has more than the average speed, but has not stayed well. Agnes! Bingen's great speed should carry her a long way in the Frankton Handicap. She is also in the saddle event, in which she is giving away five seconds, but I she is capable of going a, mile as smartly as most others-. Captain Scott ran useful races at; Epsom and Thames, and he is likely to be all the better now. Worthy Song is one of the most consistent pacers in the novice class. Useful Trotters Pirate's Last, who was placed at the last Auckland meeting, is improving and a fine stayer.' The two-mile trotting event may suit him. Worthy Lu's second to All Bingen at Epsom was suggestive of early success, but two poor displays at Thames proved very costly. If she repeats her Epsom running, she will take some beating. In his only start Getaway did well for a green trotter, but a mishap put him out of commission for the rest of the season. He is in the Innovation Handicap. Native Worry was twice placed at the Thames meeting and may have improved. Air Pilot, by Native King—'Tama-

hine.had his first outing nt Awapuni. He began badly, but whcyi on tho journey he demonstrated that ho can trot. Grand Triumph is sin old campaigner who has puzzled many trainers. In three starts for W. J. Evnon he lias recorded two seconds and ho appears to be going more solidly than previously. Moira Bingen has started only twice : and at i\wapuni she showed a deal of improvement on her Epsom form. She is a long-striding trotter, with an easy action. Prior to a mishap in May Master Hamilton was pleasing E. It. Smith, and latest reports state he is doing well. Gold Kip has improved to such an extent since racing at Thames that ho should bo considered. Ho has developed solidncss and may do better than several of his opponents on the limit. Leeleeta, who showed promiso last season for C. G. Lee, will bo making her first appoarance. Previous Winners Of horses who have previously won on the course, several who are to raco on I Saturday make their first salute to the judge at Waikato. Among the latter are Silver Watch, Native Princess, Lady Bunker, Nawton Parrish, Gloster, Hearsay and Bismuth. Kaitawa, Atarau King. Grattan Girl and Derby Lu ar.e this [ year engaged in the Newstead Handicap as well as in tho Farewell Handicap. Constant Rivals Musketeer won the Tamahere Handicap, 3.34 limit, in May and is one of tho chief fancies -for the .President's Handicap and Te Kowhai Handicap. Great Chum, who was second then and again in the Goldficlds Handicap at tho Thames meeting, is expected once more to ,bo one of his most difficult opponents. Groat Chum also ran second to Kewpie's Crest in tho last saddle event at Claudelands. Native Princess won a maiden trot early last season. Lad.v Bunker, who won in May, recently scored at Thames. Cherrill won the saddle race at the 1936 winter meeting. King Country; who was successful in the Tamahere Handicap at tho last spring meeting! has not scored since then.
