CHRISTCHURCH IMPROVEMEN YEAR'S INCREASE MAINTAINED [by teleCßaph—press association] CHRISTCHURCH, "Wednesday The improvement in Christchurch customs revenue, which has been general throughout the year, is main-tained-in the November returns. The total revenue collected in November was £195,069, compared with £149,953 in November, 1936, an increase of £45,116. For the eight months of this year the total collected was £1,462,018, compared with £1,210,781 in the corresponding period of 1936, an Increase of £251,237. The details for November, 1936 and 1937, are: —Customs duty: '1936, £9490/ £14,817. Petrol-tax: £21,275, £26,811. Tyre duty: £724, £1643. Sales tax: £30,773, £39,060. Light dues on shipping: £316, £442. Exporfc levies on wool: £3o,' £7O. Export levies on meat: £39, £27. Miscellaneous: £lOl, £42. Totals; November, • 1936, £149,953; November, 1937, £195,069. For the period of eight months the figures are as follows:-—Customs: 1936, £710,858; 1937, £857,243. Beer excise: £67,012; £83.287. Petrol tax: £158,377, £183,707. Tyre tax: £7241, £9990. Sales tax: £257,826, £315,554, Light dues: £4OBO, £4889. Export levies on wool: £3O, £1668. Export levies on meat: £4643, £5302. Miscellaneous: £714, £378. Totals: April-November, 1936, £1,210,781; April-November, 1937, £1^462,018.

Customs duty increased by £2301, and beer duty by over' £BOOO, gold duty, however, being slightly less. Sales tax, petrol tax and tyre tax also show a considerable increase. The increases revealed by a comparison of the eightmonthly period this year with tho same period of 1936 ar« substantial.
The details for the month of November in 19:57 and 19.36 are as follows: — Customs duty: 1937, £64,370; 1936, £62,069. Beer duty: £33.960. £25,727. Sales tax: £25,730, £23,583. Petrol tax at 6d a gallon: £16,681, £13,834. Tyre tax: £843, £347. Gold duty: £1427, £1558. The figures for the period AprilNovember this year and last year are as follows:-—Customs duty: 1937, £550,484; 1936. £477,816. Beer dutv: £200.682, £173.884. Sales tax; £210,687, £138.670. Petrol tax: £121,279, £107,340, Tyre tax: £7667, £sllß. Gold duty: £15,928, £15,441.
