COLLECTOR OF CUSTOMS

MR. A. PAUL TO RETIRE [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Wednesday The collector of customs at Wellington since the beginning of 1929, Mr. A. Paul, is to retire on superannuation at the end of this month. Joining the Customs Department at Dunedin in April, 1896, Mr. Paul was transferred to Wellington in 1903, and in the same year was appointed examining officer.

In 1904 and 1905 be was acting-Resi-dent Commissioner at Nine Island, and in 1906-7 was attached to the customs staff at the International Exhibition, Christchurcn. In 1916 Mr. Paul was appointed inspector, Customs Department, at Christehureh, and in 1919 to a similar position at Wellington. In 1924 he was appointed sub-collector at Wellington, and in January, 1929, became collector.
