REJECTED STATUE

GIFT TO CHRISTCHURCH DONOR TO SEEK COURT AID WRIT TO COMPEL ACCEPTANCE \ V"; ' .<7~ - [by telegraph—own correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday The controversy about the statue of James Edward FitzGerald, first superintendent of Canterbury, which has been offered to the Christchurch City Council by Mr. R. E. Green on several occasions since 1934, is not yet at an end, according to a report that was made to the council last night by its by-laws'and finance committee, for Mr. Green's. solicitor has formally notified the civic authorities of his intention to seek a writ of mandamus from the Supreme Court requiring the council to allow the statue to be erected upon Larimer Square or some other suitable site. As the matter had already been considered by the council on a number of occasions, when it had been decided that the statue would not be accepted on any terms, the committee recommended that the council's solicitors should be requested; to oppose the granting of the application. -The report was adopted by the council without comment.
