MISSING MAIL
TRACING THE CAUSES SMALL FRACTION LOST The efficiency of the mail staffs of the Post and Telegraph Department was demonstrated last year by the fact that of the millions of letters and other postal packets handled the proportion reported as missing and not traced is represented by the decimal fraction of .00243 per cent. Each complaint made is carefully investigated and the total number of complaints of non-delirery for the year was 6-358. As a result of investigations it was found that more than half of the missing packets could be accounted for satisfactorily. There were 1205 cases in which the sender was responsible for the delay and the addressee was responsible in 1144 eases. In 782 cases there had been no delay, or responsibility could not be fixed. In the survey the Post Office frankly admits that it was- responsible for delay in 315 cases out of the millions of postal packets handled. These rare lapses lrnvo been sometimes found to be duo to a letter becoming attached to the folds of a newspaper and thus accompanying it to a wrong address, the ultimate delivery of the letter being consequently dejaj'ed.
