THEFT AS SERVANT

GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL JUDGE. GRANTS PROBATION [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday Favourable references from men of good standing in Paeroa and a recommendation to probation from the »probation officer were received by 31 r. Justice Callan in tho Hamilton Supremo Court-to-day when Rodney Devcreau Makgill, agod 32, appeared for sentence for theft as a servant. Prisoner, a former employee of the Lands Department at Paeroa, had taken some stock and had sold them. Mr. Johnson said that prisoner had a family of five and had yielded to temptation. There had been a good deal of illness in the family and ho had lost his position. Restitution had been made. His Honor pointed out that prisoner had held a position of trust. However, his lapse was an isolated one and ho had apparently succumbed to temptation. His Honor referred to the fact that prisoner had made £l2 on tho sale of the stock. The probation officer's recommendation that prisoner be not required to pay the costs of the prosecution could not therefore be granted. His Honor advised prisoner to refrain from gambling in any form.. Prisoner was admitted to probation for two years and was ordered to pay tho costs of tho prosecution, £3 Lis 2d.
