POTATO DIGGING
DELAY FEARED AT PUKEKOHE MAORI WORKERS AT TANGI [IIV TK.LKG ftAl'H —OWN COMItKSI'OMIKNT] PUKEKOHE, Monday A temporary delay in potato digging is expected at Pukekoli'i as a result of the Maoris on whom the growers rely principally for labour conducting a tangi for one of their number who died suddenly early yesterday morning. Digging was affected Id a certain extent to-day, although not seriously, for a number of the Maoris had not learned of the tangi anil growers were abjo to secure sufficient casual European labour to carry on. It is feared that to-morrow and Wednesday, however, greater embarrassment will be caused. With the presort keen demand for Pukekohe potatoes, it was difficult even last week to fulfil all orders. It is not expected that the tangi will last longer than 'Wednesday, but even if all the Maoris stop work it will not mean that supplies will be completely cut off. The shortage caused, however, is likely to influence prices. Over 700 tons of potatoes were sent forward by rail to nil parte of the Dominion last week, a record figure for the district. To-day's consignment, which totalled 77 tons, was practically normal.
