LOCAL COMPETITIONS

LOW SCORING DIFFICULT PROFESSIONAL'S FINE ROUND Local golf courses were in excellent order 011 Saturday, but a wind made low scoring rather difficult. The winning scores were much higher than usual in all competitions and atMiddlcmore only one player finished better than bogey in the consolation handicap. The winner was J. N. Peart, who returned a card of 1 up, Sir Henry Morton, A. H. Kirkcr and A. E. i\l. Rhind being next. The second round of the Wiseman Cup competition was played at Maungakiekie and F. Aldrcd, M. Morpeth and A. H. Blackburn all returned net scores of 75, Aldrcd winning 011 the count-back.

The One Tree Hill professional, T. S. Galloway, was responsible for a line round of 71, details ol his score being:—• Out: 4 3 3 3 7 4 5 3 4 36 In: 5 2 3 5 4 4 4 4 4 35

A. mixed foursomes medal match was played at Akarana to mark the close of the winter season, the winners being Miss M. Will and A. I). Barber. The first round of the four-ball match-play competition for the Summer Cup was decided at Titirangi and among the favourites to be defeated were R. M. George and A. V. Shorter, who were runners-up in a similar event recently.

With a total of 34 points, H. H. Bray led the field at Glendowie in a Stableford bogev event played in conjunction with the third round for the Summer Cup.

PLAY AT MIDDLEMORE

CONSOLATION BOGEY EVENT A consolation bogey competition was played by members of the Auckland Golf Club at Middleniore 011 Saturday, the winner being J. N. Peart, who returned a card of 1 up. Other scores were:—Sir Henry Horton, A. E. M. Rhind, A. H. Kirker, L down: A. L. McLean. 2 down; B. B. Armstrong, 3 dowp. The mixed foursomes competition, which runs throughout tho season, has reached the final, in which A. J. Friedlander and Miss N. Noakes will meet E. L. Bartlect and Mrs. Bartleet. In the semi-finals A. J. Friedlander and Miss N. Noakes beat C. X. Jacobsen and Mrs. Abbott, 2 and 1; and E. L. Bartleet and Mrs. Bartleet beat G. C. Henderson and Mrs. Henderson, and 2. The season will be brought to a close next Saturday, when a mixed foursomes bogey competition will be played. Members and visitors will be the guests of tho president. Mr. .A. W. Gillies, and Mrs. Gillies, at afternoon tea, after which the prizes won during the season will be presented.

RETURNED SOLDIERS' EVENT

ANNUAL TOURNAMENT DECIDED

The annual golf tournament of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association was held ut the Akarana links during the week-end. The players, who numbered 108, were welcomed by the president. Dr. Aitken Paterson.

The championship was won by J. Swanson, one of the youngest players taking part, while the runner-up was G. Johnson. The results of the other competitions were as follows:

Schischka, 285 yards. TITIRANGI CLUB The first round of the Titirangi Golf Club's four-ball best-ball contest for the Summer Cup was commenced on Saturday. The following games were played:—Birch and Olsen beat Ansel] and Hewson at the 10th; Woods and Christensen beat F. G. and R. E Alpe at the 19th; Wakeman and Fawcett beat Thomson and AVorley, r> and 3; Sinclair and young beat Georpre and Shorter, 3 and 2; Robinson and Bartlett beat Carnachan and Fraser-Smith, 2 and 1. MAUNGAKIEKIE CLUB Members of the. Maungakiekie Golf Clnb played the second round of the Wiseman Cup competition on Saturday, the best scores beins as follows:—F. Aldred, 88, 13—75; A. H. Blackburn, !)7, 22 —75; H. Morpeth, 82. 7—75; H. Roy, 82, O—7G; J. Sherlock, !)<>, 20—7G; D. McCormick, 84, S —7o. F. Aldred won on the count back. With two rounds played, McCormick leads with a net scoro of 146. CLOSING DAY AT AKARANA The Akarana Golf Club closed its winter season on Saturday with a mixed foursomo match, which was won by Miss M. Will and H. D. Barber, with a score of 5)1, 22 —(>!). ; The president, Dr. J. Aitken Paterson, presented the trophies won during the year, the most important of which were:—Senior championship, P. Smith; intermediate championship, L. Harris; junior championship, H. Bridgens; Coltman Cup, G. E. Cairns; Roskill Cup, H. P. Cullen; Edwards trophy. H. P. Cullen; Howe.v Walker trophies, C. Shenkin and J. S. Stenberg; Patterson Cup, J. Swanson and J. S'halfoon; captain's prize, C'. B. Curric. The ladies' club presented the senior championship cup to Miss K. Hickman. GLENDOWIE CLUB The third round of the Stableford bogey competition for the Summer Cup was played by members of the Glendowie Golf Club on Saturday. Following were the best scores returned: —PI. H. Bray, 27, 7—31; T. F. McCarthy, 15, 17—32; S. Keys. 21, 11— 32; 11. E. Jolly, r>, 7 —32; L. H. Jackson, It, IS—32; G. Palmer, 19, 11—30; C. D'Authreau, 22, B—3o. R. Keys, 103, and R. W. McCarthy, 99, now lead with one more round to play. NORTH SHORE LADIES' CLUB Medal foursomes were played by week-end members of the North Shore Ladies' Golf Club at the closing of the winter season. The best scores were:—Mrs. M. Chisholm and Mrs. G. Rutherford, !>B, 21% —7 (>%; Mrs. B. Read and Miss I. Wright, 08. 20% 77'/.; Mrs. F. W. H. Chambers and Miss L. Langley, !)8, 20—78. The putting competition was won by Miss L. Blair and the threo best cards by Miss J. Ardley.
