WORK BEFORE CHRISTMAS
AUCKLAND UNEMPLOYED APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC It was announced in January last by Mr. J. R. Klsbury, State placement officer in Auckland, that the service hoped to effect 6000 placements in private employment this year, a figure that represented a large increase 011 that in the previous year. itii 178 placements effected last week, the total so far this year has reached just over 8000. Jt is anticipated that these figures will increase considerably as a result of an appeal to various organisations and the public to give every available and suitable man 011 the unemployed list at least one day's work before Christinas. "A man 011 sustenance has really nothing to spare to provide some little luxury for his wife and children," said Mr. Elsbury. "It is a pitiful tiling for the children of ail unemployed man not to get the little Christmas gifts other children receive, and a day s work mav make all the difference in this respect. If one person in every 70 in the Auckland Province could guarantee a day's work to an unemployed man. the purpose of the appeal would be fulfilled. There must be many factories and stores who could employ a few men in cleaning up for a day or so before Christmas."
