VICE-ADMIRAL MASSEY SERVICE IN AUSTRALIA (Received November 7, 5.5 p.m.) PARIS. Not. 6 The death has occurred of ViceAdmiral George Lawrence Massey, who served for several years with the Royal Australian Navy and who was known in New Zealand. Vice-Admiral Massey was widely known in Australian naval circles as Captain Massey. . He was captain of H.M.A.S. Adelaide in 1925-26. He also, for a time, commanded H.M.A.S. Sydney, and brought H.M.A.S. Canberra • •
from England to Australia, being in command of that ship for about three years. In 1930 he returned to England and retired. In 1926 he visited New Zealand with the Adelaide and. after his retirement, revisited Auckland in 1&35. when he spent a holiday fishing "at Taupo. ME. SAMUEL ; COPLEY BANKING AND INSURANCE (Received November 7, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Nov. 8 The death has occurred of Mr. Samuel William Copley, banker and insurance company director, at the age of 78. Mr. Copley went to Australia at the age of 25 and followed many occupations until as a result of a land boom he became a large-scale agriculturist. He returned to England in 1914 and developed his insurance company interests. - Mr. Copley was chairman of directors of the Atlantic Insurance Company and the West Australian Insurance Company. He was also chairman of directors of Copley's Bank, Limited. SIR COLVILLE SMITH (Received November 7, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Nov The death is announced of t . Sir Philip Colville Smith, who retired from the Grand Secretaryship of the United Grand Lodge of English Free-, masons on September 24.
