MURDER IN CHICAGO

MUCH FEARED CHINAMAN FEARS OF A TONG WAR CHICAGO, Nov. 3 Chin Jack Lem, aged 61, the most powerful, the most feared, and one of the most wealthy Chinese in Chicago, was fatally shot while walking in an empty rain-swept street in the heart of Chinatown. The murderer, believed to be another Chinese, glided from the darkness, fired four shots into Lena's body, and then fled. In a few minutes hundreds of Chinese appeared and surrounded the body. It is feared that the crime possibly will cause a Tong war. Lem's sons believe the murder was a reprisal for Lem's refusal to contribute to a fund for the Chineso .war

The investigation of the crime is complicated by the belief that Lem, who was imprisoned in 1924 on a charge of extortion, had many enemies.
