DEARER HAIRCUTS

rise of threepence INCREASE NEXT MONDAY HIGHER COSTS IN TRADE An increase of 3d in the charge for adult hair-cutting, bringing the price to Is 6d from next Monday, was agreed upon at a meeting attended by a large number of city and suburban members of the hairdressing section of the Auckland District Retail Tobacconists and Hairdressers' Association this week. No alteration was made in the price of children's haircutting, which still remains at 9d, but the ago limit for children was fixed at 13 years. Boys and girls of I t years and over will be charged Is, and on Fridays and Saturdays all children, irrespective of age, will be required to pay Is. "Auckland is practically the only centre in the North Island where Is 3d is charged for adult hair-cutting," said .Air. R. M. Carter, secretary of the association, yesterday. "For some time past Is tid has been charged regularly in other parts, including small country towns.

"Complete agreement between employers and male employees concerning the provisions of a new award was reached in conciliation recently, and the award is about to be issued, embodying increases in wages and other privileges which will result in substantially higher costs," Mr. Carter continued. "Farly in 1936, when there was a 48-hour week and a hairdresser s assistant's wages were £4 10s a week, Is 3d was charged for hair-cutting. Under the new award, however, there will be a 44-hour week, and the wages will be i'.J- There will also be provision for annual holidays and other special privileges. "Restricted hours are also to be included in the now award. At present, an assistant may be employed until six o'clock at night, and his employer may work until seven. When the new award becomes operative, however, employees must stop work at 5.30 and saloons must close at six. Ihus it is obvious that a slight increase in charges is justified."
