TANNERY INDUSTRY
QUIET PERIOD IN SOUTH REDUCTION OF STAFF [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN. Wednesday As in Auckland the tannery trade in Otago is suffering severely through a lack of orders. The manager of one firm stated to-day that the position hero is just as bad as in the north, and that the same applies to Christchurch. Ho went on to say that his firm had recently been compelled to reduce its staff, and there was every probability that further reductions would be necessary within the next few weeks. "It is a pity such an industry as tanning should be faced with this situation, for it is essentially a primary industry, which absorbs local raw material and supplies the local market," ho concluded.
