LEASE OF WARSHIPS
CONTRACT REPORTED SIGNED UNITED STATES VESSELS RIO J)K JANEIRO, Oct. 21 Tho newspapers indicate that a contract for the leasing of six over-age warships from the United States to Brazil has been signed, in spite of the protest by Argentina. The suggestion to lease over-age destroyers to South American countries caused a Keen cont roveisy in the United States and some of the South American States. It was alleged by some critics that the proposal would be a violation of the London Naval Treaty, but the Secretary of. Stale, Mr. Cordcll Hull, said he did not think tho olhci signatories to the treaty would object. The vessels would only be leased for training purposes. On August 1-1 it was reported that, following an informal protest by Argentina, the United States authorities had indefinitely postponed the proposal and it was believed that it would not bo revived.
