SURVEY OF HOUSES

HIGH STANDARD IN NAPIER FEW OVERCROWDED DWELLINGS [BY TKLKGKAPR —OWN CORHESPOXDKXT] NAPIER. Friday The housing survey that is being made in Napier by municipal officers has disclosed a high general standard in housing conditions. Only seven out of 550 houses inspected have been found occupied in conditions that can be described as overcrowding in the terms of the housing regulations. Barely 10 per cent of the total number of houses in Napier and Port Ahuriri was considered to warrant inspection, and of those inspected all but a small number were in a satisfactory condition. In the structural and technical sense many of the older dwellings have been found by the building inspector, Mr. E. Grant, to be showing evidence of damage caused by the earthquake of 1931, floors being; out of level. While the borer beetle is evident in many cases, the damage is not considered to be unduly severe.
