OBITUARY

MB. ALFRED HEWSON WELL-KNOWN BUILDER The death has occurred after a short illness of Mr. Alfred Hewson, wellknown Auckland builder and contractor, in his 81st year. Born in Lincolnshire, England, Mr. Hewson came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship Matoaka in 1859. Mr. Hewson came to Auckland to learn the carpentering trade. Later ho commenced building and contracting, the firm being known as Hewson and McNaught. Sir. Hewson was formerly chairman of the Ellerslie Town Board and,a member of the Ellerslie School Committee. Ho was also a past master of Lodge Wairoa, bo. 00, Ho married Miss Sarah Hill, daughter of the late Mr. James Hill, and there was a family of 10 children, seven 01 whom are living. MRS. HARRIET CLARK The death occurred yesterday at her home in Herbert Road, Mount Eden, of Mrs. Harriet Clark, widow of the late Mr. George Clark, of ?' hara, Northern Wairoa. Mrs. Clark, who wrfs 82 years of age, was born in London and arrived at Auckland as a child of nine by the ship Bombay, with her parents, Mr. and Mrjs. Henry Wooderson. Her husband belonged to a pioneer family of Northern Wairoa, where tlio greater part of her life was spent. Their homestead was well known for its hospitality, and Mrs. Clark was j much esteemed for many acts of kind- j ness and the active support "which she | gave to the work of the Anglican j Church in the district. She is survived j by eight daughters and one son. Two , other sons gave their lives in tlio Great; War. MR. JOHN BATKIN [fkom ouk own correspondent] TUAKAU. Thursday The death has occurred at Walton I of Mr. John Batkin, aged 84, of Bromley Park, Tuakau, who was associated ; with farming interests in the Auckland province for many years. He was born at Abbots Bromley. Staffordshire, and resided there until 25 years of age. Ho then came to New Zealand in 'tho sailing ship Jessie Reidman. He was farming for some time at Okoroire, in the Waikato, and later at Tamahere, near CambrdgQ. He removed to Auckland, and for nine years was associated with a cousin, the lato j Mr. William Batkin, in farming at Avondale. From 1900 to 1907 ho was driver of a Royal Mail van serving the city and suburbs. He then acquired Bromley Park and had resided there since. lie was on a visist to Walton when his death occurred. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. There are three grandchildren. / . r MRS. A. M. NEILSON [FROM OCR OWN correspondent] HAMILTON. Thursday The death has occurred in Hamilton of Mrs. Anna Margaret Neilson, at the age of 77. She was born in Denmark and came to New Zealand as a child. The family lived in Norsewood and Porangahau, Hawke's Bay, where deceased married Mr. Alfred Lambert in 1880. Some years later she married Mr. Peter Neilson. Until 12 years ago Mrs. Neilson remained in Hawke's Bay. and eight years ago she moved to Hamilton. Her second husband predeceased her. She is survived by three sons and four daughters. ~ j - MRS. E. L. HIKES [from OCR ? owx correspondent] TE AROHA, Thursday The death has occurred of Mrs. Edith Lavinia Hi hps, of Te Aroha West, who has been well known and respected in the district for many years. Born near Birmingham, England. 63 years ago, Mrs. Hines came to New Zealand with her parents in 1878, and the family settled at Ohaupo. In 1895 she married I Mr. R. B. Hiues. and after residing for some years at Hamilton and Eureka, they took up land at Te Aroha, West, where .Mrs. Hines had lived ever since. She is survived.by an adult family of 11, and 17 grandchildren. MR. ALEXANDER OLEMETT [by telegrafh—own correspondent] KAITAIA, Thursday The death occurred at the Kawakawa Hospital yesterday morning of Mr. Alexander Dougal Clemett, aged 80 years. He was born in Ballarat, Victoria, in 18-57, and came to New Zealand at any early age. Mr. Clemett lived in Wellington and Kaikoura. j where he joined the Post and Telegraph j Department. He served* at Wanganui j and Marton, and then was appointed I postmaster at Te Kopuru, Northern I Wairoa. Later he was stationed at j Ohaupo, Ohaeawai and Mangonui. Mr. 1 ( lemett was next transferred to the 1 Waikato, and retired about 16 vears ago, coming to live at Mangonui*". He was a founder and the first master of tlio Lodge Mangonui and was always interested in Freemasonry. Sir. Clemett is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter.

MR. R. E. HORNBLOW [BY TEI,ECUAI'H—-OWN" CORRESPONDENT] DARGAVILLE, Thursday The death occurred this morning at a private hospital in Palmerston North of Mr. Robert Edward Hornblow, of Dargaville. Mr. Hornblow, who was 76 years of age, was associated with newspaper work from the age of 10, and in later years owned publications in Mangaweka, Dargaville, \Vhangarei, Rawene and Kohukohu, finally returning to Dargaville in 1936 and establishing the Dargaville News. He was Mayor of Dargaville from 1919 to 1925. Although he was at no stage successful in entering the House of Representatives, Mr. Hornblow centred a (neat deal of bis interests in political life and at different times contested several seats, including Kaipara and Bav of Islands. He leaves one son.
