CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY

v SUCCESSFUL SEASON ENDS MODERN WORKS PERFORMED A successful season had been enjoyed by tho Auckland Chamber Music Society, stated the report presented by tho president, Mr. K. Varley Hudson, at tho annual meeting of the society last night. Works by Mozart, Beethoven, Dvorak, Mendelssohn and Schubert as well as more modern composers had been performed and there had been an increase in the number of subscribers.

Reference was made to the death in August of the president, Mr. Roger Fenton, who was one of the founders and through who.so efforts the society had been able to continue through the depression. A debt of gratitude was owed to Mr. Fenton by Auckland music in general and the Chamber Music Society in particular. The annual meeting was preceded bv a concert, tho fourth for the season. Three works were presented, a piano quartette by Mozart, a trio for violin, viola and 'cello by Schubert, and a piano quartette by Gabriel Faure. The performers were lna Bosworth (violin), Lois Walls (viola), Lalla Hemus ('cello) and Leo Whittaker (piano). A feature of the programme was tho quartette by the French composer Faure, a pupil of Saint-Saens. This was the second time the work has been played in Auckland and a sensitive rendering was given by the performers. Tho two first pieces played provided an effective contrast to tho Faure quartette.
