SOUTH AFRICAN WAR
TROOPS FROM DOMINION October 21 is a day which will always lie held in honoured remembrance in New Zealand, for •it in tho anniversary of the day on which .18 years ago Now Zealand despatched her first contingent of troops to the aid of Britain in the South African War. New Zealand was the first colony to send troops to assist Britain in tho struggle, tho contingent leaving from Wellington only nine days after war had actually broken out.
Tho soldiers, who were cheered on their way by an intensely enthusiastic crowd of .00,000 people as they embarked on the Waiwera, consisted of 215 men of all ranks under the command of Major A. W. Robin, ol Dunedin, and all wtro provided with horses.
Speakers who hade the contingent farewell took it as a happy augury that they were setting out on tho anniversary of Trafalgar Day. Actually 10 contingents, totalling over 0000 men, were despatched before the end of the war.
