62 MILES RIDE
EMPIRE GAMES TRIALS VETERAN CYCLIST WINS MANY MEET WITH MISHAPS [BV TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] C'HRJSTCHURCH, Wednesday Seventeen of New Zealand's best cyclists contested the 100 kilometres Empire Games trial from Papanui to Amber ley and back this afternoon. Emerging from the dust and grime of the 62-miles ride, after travelling 40 miles with a buckled front wheel, the Canterbury veteran, F. J. Grose, carried off the principal honours. He was prominent all the way, setting a fast pace whenever he took the lead and demonstrating his clear superiority in the final sprint. It was a spectacular race. Thirteen of the 17 starters fell, had punctures or were left by the wayside before half the journey had been completed. The times for the first four men were: —F. J. Grose (Canterbury), 2h 40m .54 2-ss, 1; R. S. Triner (Auckland), 2h 40m 54 3-ss, 2; J. Brown (Auckland), 2h 40m 54 4-ss, 3; H. I{. Dutton (Wellington), 2h 40m 555, 4 Grose's time compares favourably with the Australian trial time, which was 2h 53m 435. The last Olympic championship was won at Berlin in 1936 in 2h 33m ss.
