FAT STOCK SALES

PIUCES AT WESTFIELD DROP IN SHEEP VALUES OTHER MARKETS ALSO RECEDE Heavy supplies were responsible for easier values in some sections of the market at the Westfield fat stock sales yesterday. Sheep were chiefly affected, substantial declines on recent high levels being recorded. Lambs, however, were firm. Calves also receded sharply, and many plainer sorts of cows were cheaper, although good cow beef and ox made late rates. Pigs were unchanged. The increased entry of cattle consisted largely of rough cows, for which there was a slack demand. Values in this class eased by Is per 1001b., but the better grade of stock sold firm, with a top bid of £l3 l()s, which was on a par with the similar transaction of a week ago. Heavy steers were at a premium, but the supply was generally sound in quality. The best individual price of £l7 J7s Gd was much below recent top offers. For the ninth successive Aveek values ranged to 41s per 1001b. Subdued Sheep Sale Sheep came forward in the largest numbers for many weeks, shorn types predominating. Competition was subdued from the outset, only scattered pens of quality sheep producing good prices. Wethers were quoted lower as much as 2s each to 40s, as against last week's range to 41s 6d. Shorn wethers made to 335, compared with 34s 9d a week ago. Ewes were between 2s and 3s a head cheaper to 35s 6d, compared with 37s 6d at the former sale. Prices to 25s Gd were realised for shorn ewes, tho best offer last week being 28s. Prime hoggets failed to make late quotations by over Is a head, shorn and unfinished sorts being even lower in price. The sale became more depressed as it advanced, final pens attracting little attention from buyers. Best woolly hoggets brought 375, which was 2s under last week's bidding. Tho only firm section of the sheep market, spring lambs, sold from 22s to 37s each, there being a smaller selection of good stock. Heavy Calf and Pig Entries There was an ample supply of all types of calves in one of the heaviest yardings for some time. In practically every class there was a slackness in demand, and prices eased by 4s to 5s a head. One fine heavy runner realised £9 15s, which has not been equalled for three weeks, and vealers were priced to £6 3s, as against £G 8s at the previous sale. Pigs were delivered in much increased numbers, and quality was plentiful. There was a steady sale for all grades, which were quoted firm on recent returns. Baconers averaged from GJd to Gid per lb, and porkers to 7d. Stores were in keen demand, and one exceptional chopper was traded at £6 15s.
