Pirow, denied that the Union Government had agreed to assist Britain in time of war or to defend British colonies. "If ever you are called upon to take up a rifle because we have a contract with Britain to go to war, I tell you now, as Mill--ister of Defence, that I will give you permission to rebel and refuse to go to war. "I shall be the first rebel in such circumstances."
