SUSTENANCE PAY
NO INCREASE CONTEMPLATED STATEMENT BY MINISTER [by telegraph—owx corrksfoxdent] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday An •announcement that the Government did not contemplate an increase in sustenance rates was made by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, in his reply to a deputation which approached him on tha point. Mr. Armstrong said that representations regarding the sustenance rates had already been made to him in Wellington by the national organisation of the unemployed. He had told them "pretty definitely" that there was no prospect of any increase in sustenance rates until there was a general increase in wages throughout the Dominion. " Wo cannot,the .Minister added, "place sustenance men in apposition where their income will exceed that ot men who are working. The position is that some men on sustenance do an odd day or so's work and arc really in n better position than some men in regular employment." Answering other points raised, MrArmstrong said that lie had not had time to ileal with the question of a Christmas bonus for unemployed. Hi** matter, howevei, would be gone into.
