BURGLARY CHARGE
LABOURER ON TRIAL INCIDENTS IN WAREHOUSE A labourer, Henry Samuel Johnson, nged 33, appeared before Mr. Justice Callan and a jury in the Supreme Court yesterday on charges of breaking and entering the warehouse of Paramount Frocks, Limited, and stealing a cheque book. Mr. Hubble represented the Crown and Mr. Noble appeared for accused. Mary Johnston Thomson, forewoman for Paramount Frocks, Limited, stated that she was the last to leave the premises at live o'clock 111 the afternoon of August 18. The door and windows were all secure. She was the^ first to arrive The next morning at 7.45 o'clock and she found the door wide open. Drawers and boolu were 011 the floor, which was strewn with spent matches. An alarm clock had been taken from the workroom and placed near a settee, and the clock alarm was set for 4.30 a.m. A suitcase with frocks in it had been transferred from the showroom to the workroom, and the tickets were removed from the frocks, continued witness. She presumed that whoever broke into the warehouse also §lcpt on the settee and used the alarm to wake him. Owen Joseph V Jonas, managingdirector of the firth, said that he discovered two post-dated cheques were missing, one for £lO and another for £4 6s. made payable to the company. Two days late? he discovered the loss of his personal cheque-book. He had given no authority for its removal, nor did he fill in two cheque forms for £2 each.
The Court adjourned until this morning.
