ANGLICAN CHURCH

WOEK OF THE SYNOD BTANDING COMMITTEE DIFFICULTIES OF ELECTION A difficulty developed at the meeting of the Anglican Synod last night when an attempt was made to fill two remaining clergy vacancies on the Standing Committee, nominees for which had failed to receive majority votes from both the clergy and the laity at two ballots on tho previous evening. One of the seats was filled after two further ballots and the committee was only completed when a single nomination was received prior to what would have been the fifth ballot of the evening. On the second ballot the Rev. G. Y. Gerard was elected and fresh nominations were called for a third ballot, five names being received. No finality was reached, however, in tho third ballot, after which three nominees withdrew, leaving the Rev. 11. J. Stanton and the Kev. It. G. Coats. Again, neither candidate received the required majorities and each intimated that be proposed to withdraw. Nominations were again called and the name of Mr. Stanton, who agreed to alter his decision, was the only one received. Mr. Stanton was accordingly elected. The completed committee is as follows; —Clergy: Archdeacons H. A. Hawkins and W. J. Simkin, Dean W. Fancourt, Canon R. L. Connolly, the Revs. G. V. Gerard, P. Houghton, W. N. Panapa and R. J. Stanton. Laity: Messrs. W. N. Coughlin, H. R. Hesketh, R, H. Instill, J. J. Laws, J. B. Lusk, A. L. Spence, C. J. Tunks and A. M. Woods. The Diocesan Mission Committee was elected as follows: —Dean W. l'ancourt, Canons F. W. Young and C. A. B. \V atson, the Revs. C. F. R. Harrison, A. J. Greenwood, H. B. Wingfield, P. Houghton F. I. Parsons, L. E. Cartridge and G. 'R. Monteith, Misses Hamlin, G. Baker and J. Easton. The following were elected to the Sunday School Board: —Canon It. L. Connolly, the ltevs. W. Lusk, \S. W. Averill, L. E. Cartridge and H. Squires, Messrs. J. Richardson and C. M. Calder, Mrs. C. Atiken, Sister Edith and Miss M. McFarland.

CONTINUATION OT SESSION DIOCESAN AND PARISH FUNDS The Auckland Diocesan Synod was continued yesterday. During the afternoon and evening meetings considerable business was dealt with, including discussion on two bills, nine notices or motion and several reports. In the morning a conference of Maori clerg.* was held. The synod will conclude its business to-day. The adjourned debate 011 a motion by the Rev. U. J. Stanton urging the need for greater support of the Diocesan Central Fund and of funds for parish purposes, was resumed. The inadequate support at present being given to these funds was discussed by several speakers, a number of whom advocated the appointment of an organiser to secure money for the central fund. Both Archbishop Avcrill and Archdeacon Hawkins referred to the belief among many people that the central fund received money from church lands, which, they stated, was not so.

Mr. Stanton's motion was carried, as was a resolution recommending; the Standing Committee to proceed with the appointment of an organising secretary at the earliest possible date.

Bills to establish a Diocesan Loan Board and to amend the Parish Statute. 1929, were read for the third time and passed. The inadequacy of the travelling expenses paid to a number of clergy, particularly in the larger country districts, was referred to in the report of tho finance committee of the synod. The committee expressed the hope that the Standing Committee would give the matter attention during the coming year.

The committee also drew attention to tlio fact that the practice of making grants to parishes employing assistant cnrat.es was becoming a permanent charge on the fund, whereas it was started as an emergency measure. The report was approved. Appreciation of the work being done bv th<3 Church Army in the diocese was expressed in a resolution moved by tho Rev. A. Drake.
