TRIALS ON GRASS

TRAINING AT EPSOM KEWPIE'S KING DOES WELL' SOUND HALF-MILE IN 1.6 BY ABAYDOS The Epsom grass track with the pole 9 out 35ft. Iras in good order on Saturday, when the Jellicoe Handicap can- - didate, Kewpie's King, ran a smart half-mile in 1.6. Bismuth and Luminate, 1.7, also showed speed, and other good efforts were those of Lucky Love and Marble Boy, 1.8, Forest Jewel, 1.8 1-5, Handicapper, 1.8 2-5, Ranfurly Lass, 1.8 4-5, Sequoia, Agnes Bingen and Worthy Quest, 1.9, Frank Best and Audo Patch, 1.9 3-5. On the dirt track, which was very fast, Munga Tangi ran a mile and a-half in 3.20. Lucky Love (D. Cook), Bismuth (A. McGarrv), Luminate (J. E. Seagar) and Kewpie's King (A. Bryee) went from the mile and a-half at intervals of :i second, and as they passed the mile post, Agnes Bingen (D. 0. Jones) went after them. Lucky Lore led to the mile in 2.28. Bismuth headed the leader at the furlong disc, where Kewpie's King began his run and won in 3.32 3-5. It was a sound effort and his half in 1.6 was the best seen for some time. Bismuth was in his best mood and kept up to his work, recording 3.34 4-5. He has made appreciable progress during the last week. Luminate. who went 3.34, has improved with fast work. Lucky Love did his work very freely in 3.36. Agnes Bingen impressed to run her mile in 2.21. A Keen Finish Tommy McElwyn (A. McKenzie), Charteris Bay (A. Cole), Marcus (A. Brvce) and Ranfurly Lass (D. Gillard) went a mile and a-half. the last-named being four seconds behind the leader. Kewpie's Bingen (H. McNaughton) joined in at the mile and a-quarter, where Charteris Bay had charge, but Tommy McElwyn took the field to the the mile in 2.29. Charteris Bay was first into the straight from Marcus and Kewpie's Bingen, with Ranfurly Lass improving and the four horses swept across the line together, Ranfurly Lass ' returning 3.37 4-5. Marcus again demonstrated improved form by going 3.39, ''Charteris Bay taking a fraction longer. Kewpie's Bingen ran his section in 3.2, finishing gamely. After going beyond over a mile andi a-quarter, Tommy McElwyn was eased. Red Eagle (J, Gee) went from the mile and a-half, being picked up after two furlongs by Kewpie's Queen (W. Gee), with Top Hand (S. M. August) joining them at the six furlongs. Red Eagle bfroke badly, Kewpie's Queen holding off Top Hand in 3.8. Red Eagle, who took 3.59, settled down to trot the final half in 1.12. Mandalay (D. 0. Jones), although boring on the turns, ran a mile and ahalf in 3.41. She went more smoothly on the last half in 1.11. Parrish Belle (C. G. Lee) idled over the first part of two miles, taking 2.38 > to reach the mile, but completing the task in 5.4. She gave a faultless display. She is carrying more condition than . usual. [ Handicapper Finishes Well ' Native Fern (W. Fleming), Audo I Patch (,C. G. Lee) and Bedford (F. Herring, jun.), left the mile and ahalf three seconds ahead of Handicapper (G. H. Stubbs),-the leader passing the » mile in 2.39. Handicapper came with a fast spring to win in 3.45 2-5. He " has built up in condition. • Audo Patch trotted 3.48 3-ss, Bedford • returning 3.49. Jewel Crest (W. Willetts) and Worthy Quest (G. H. Stubbs), after going a quarter, were joined at the mile by the Truman Direct gelding (C. G. Lee), who took them to the six furlongs in 1.53. Worthy Quest won in 3.2, and showed improved stamina. In pacing the final half a shade better than 1.10, the Truman Direct gelding displayed promise. Pink Lady (B. Dyer) after taking 2.41 for the 'mile, completed a mile and a-half easily in 3.56. Tangaroa (C. G. Lee) completed a mile and a-half in 3.39. He is very fit. but over-keen in the early stages. Petit Jewel (W. H. Andrews) conceded John's Last (D. Smith) a second from the mile and a-quarter, but, breaking early, lost a good deal of ground. He was handy again, as John's Last passed the six furlongs in 1.56, and, putting in better work on the next half, was going comfortably alongside his companion at the end in 3.5, John's Last showing 3.6.

Frank Best Improving Silver Watch (L. J. Mahoney) led Frank Best (A. Bryce) from the mile and a-half and reached the mile in 2.27 2-5. They finished together in 3.3? 2-5. Kewpie's Crest (W. Gee)., assisted by- ' Kaitawa for the last ten furlongs (J. w •" Gee), ran a mile and a-half- in 3.39. He went lazily in the early part. Kaitawa ran 3.1. Marble Boy (C. G. Lee) left the mile and a-half a second ahead of Forest Jewel (L. Mitchell), with Argolis (S. .7. M. August) going two seconds later.- - He finished- in 3.43 and for a novice he did very well to record 1.8 for the last half. Argolis, who was unhoppled, locked likely to run a very smart half until he broke. Hillcrest. (D. 0. Jones) worked a mile in 2.24. He has made progress ' since the August meeting. Taken over the first half-mile by ' Queen Potts (S. M. August) in 1.14, Pirate's Last (L. J. Mahoney) trotted a mile in 2.25. Sequoia (W. H. Sammons) and Gipsy Light (A. Cole) ran the first half of a mile in 1.15, but the former won' very easily in 2.24, a useful effort. Munga Tangi's Fast Run 011 the dirt track, Munga Tangi (C. M. Morrison) conceded Young Rodney (L. Laver) three seconds start and a beating over two miles in 4.35. > After a slow half-mile, Munga Tangi took 2.13 for the next mile, and keeping up the speed, he completed the last mile and a-haif in 3.20. an attractive trial. In going 4.40, Young Rodney demonstrated that he is on the im- v prove. His third section, 1.7, was his best, and he trotted the last mile and a-half in 3.24 3-5. Anthony's Gift \(W. Olive) ran the last four of seven furlongs in 1.7, coming home the last quarter in 32 2-ss. He is in excellent heart and should improve with racing. Gold Kip (D. Cook) worked soundly over a mile and a-half in 3.48, the last half in 1.15. _ Queenie Direct (S. M. August) worked over a mile and a-quarter in 3.1, the last half in 1.11, going well within he,rself. Lady Musk (G. H. Phipps), while going a mile and a-half comfortably, made 110 mistakes. Free Grattan (A. Cole) displayed dash while sprinting the last three of seven furlongs in 51s, Vanora (N. Mahoney) taking 52 3-ss. Great Sonoma (W. C. Willetts), Autumn Lu (G. H. Stubbs) and Auto Machine (A. Brown) worked two miles on the sand. Both trotters maintained track will be available tomorrow morning from 6 to 10.30 a.m., and final trials, on the course proper, will take place on Thursday morning.
