GAMING ACT OFFENCES

TWENTY-FOUR MEN FINED MANY OTHERS TO APPEAR ALLEGED LICENSING BREACHES Arrested when a raid was mado by the police on premises at 39 Albert Street on Friday night, 27 men charged with offences under the Gaming Act appeared in tho Police Court before Mr. Arthur Rosser and Mr. C. E. Phillips, J.l'.'s, on Saturday morning. Sub-Inspector Fox said the defendants comprised only a portion of the total number arrested, the others having boon released on bail alter tho raid. Defendants had been there for the purpose of gambling, and had offered a variety of excuses. There was 210 record against any of them. Crown and anchor was being played when the polico arrived. Remands Granted Oil the application of Mr. Fox, Robert Varney, Patrick Francis Breinman and Michael Alban Atkinson, who were charged with assisting in the management of a common gaming house, were remanded until to-day. Bail was allowed in self £SO, and one surety of £SO. Charged with being found without lawful excuse in a common gaining house, 2-1 defendants were each fined £2. They were Sydney Priestley, Joseph ChaUorton, Matthew Morris, Duncan McMillan, Dennis Driscoll, John Dawson, Herbert John Keeling, Jack Burns, James Butler, Sydney George Ross, Hohepa Eruera, Arthur Grace, John Paki, John William Wynd, Thomas James Gibson, iS'elson Ronald James, John Georgo William Ross, Alexander Montgomery, Lewis Charles Harkin, James McMillan, Harry Kennedy Clark, Charles William Knott, Edgar William Hayward, and Charles Buxton. " No Oar Hire " "I understand there was no car hire in these cases," said Mr. Rosser. "The State provided it; there will bo no costs." When application was made by some defendants for time to pay, Mr. Fox said there was 110 objection, except in the case of three members of tho crew of the steamer Port Brisbane, which was due to sail. An officer of the ship was in Court to arrange for payment. Tho other defendants were allowed seven days to pay. Other Defendants Tho remainder of those arrested were released 011 bail following the raid, after appearing at a special sitting of the Court held before Mr. G. R. Magee, J.P. They will appear in the Polico Court either to-day or to-morrow. They were Jack Ellis, who was charged with being the occupier of a common gaming house at 39 Albert Street, and the following, who were charged with being found 011 the premises without lawful excuseßaymond William Stokes, John Edward Siddins, George Surtees, Gordon Francis Bridge, Reginald James Collins, Sydney Pereival Midlane, Mcrvyn Sadler, Arthur John Kcenan, Ronald Kenneth McLeod, Robert Frederick Arthur Goodman, Cyril Kcven McKenna, Bonnie Eccleston, Phyllis Maud Judson. Jean Waller, Lillian Ross, Eileen Taylor, Kathleen Henare, and Gertrude Fleming. The persons who were found on tho Ixion Club premises, in Kingston Street, City, which was raided simultaneously with the Albert Street premises. will appear 011 summons in tho Police Court. The occupier will bo charged with selling liquor on unlicensed premises, while about 50 persons will be charged with being found on the promises.
