HAWERA DOINGS LICKEM MAKING PROGRESS FRIESLAND AND LOWENBERG [BY , TEI-EGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAWERA. Friday Preparations are now in full swing for the approaching Trentham and Waverley meetings, and the Hawera tracks were busy yesterday, several smart times being recorded. Ihe plough and the outside of the proper were in excellent order. On tho plough, Lickem (Monkley) was going nicely alongside Naughty Marietta (Murray) at the conclusion of five furlongs in 1.41. Lickem appears to have trained on the right way since the Wanganui meeting, and did his work in good style. Naughty Marietta is coming on splendidly. Rco Ha (Fryer) was kicked up to record 51 4-5s for half a mile, lhe halfbrother to Taitoru is still backward. Friesland (Monkley) and Lo wen berg (Murray) were responsible for an attractive* effort over six furlongs in 1.17 3-5, tho first three in 39a. Lowenberg was slightly in front at the end of half a mile, but Friesland came home strongly, and was under a nice hold at the finish. Both are working pleasingly. Vadanoe and Lo Grand infused plenty of clash into a round of solid pace work. They are in good order, but may require a race before being seen at their best. Kift Ora (Fryer) worked with her usual freedom to complete five furlongs in 1.41. Shp is ii brilliant track galloper, but her public form has not been good. Riverfeale ran five furlongs in 1.5. On the course proper Le Marquis (Grvlls) and Narrator (Hawkes) led Gold Glade (Cole) to the straight entrance while covering half a mile, but Gold Glade cut tho corner and was a neck in front at the finish in 50 3-ss. It was a sound effort for novices. Fafner (Hon ton) moved rcry scratehily over three furlongs in 40 l-ss. The Siegfried colt is a way below his best. Notium (Cole) worked impressively over half a mile in 50 4-ss. He should give a good account of himself in the open sprint at Waverley. Lord Cavendish (Murray) was doing better than Ruling Star (Monkley) nt the conclusion of half a mile in 51 l-ss. Both ran about a good deal in the straight, especially the two-vear-old Lord Cavendish. Swift and Sure (Button) gave another good display of fast jumping over a round of five hurdles the reverse way. Ho appears to be staying on better tlnyi previously and fining down in condition.
