VICTORIAN MYSTERY
WAGGON DRIVER MISSING * HIGHWAYMENSUSPECTED < i (Received October 16, 12.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE. Oct. 15 The mysterious disappearance from one of the main Victorian country thoroughfares of a transport waggon laden with wool, tallow and skins valued at more than £I6OO has aroused fears that the driver may have been kidnapped and may have met with foul play. John Dempsey, of the Derbyshire Transport Service, Carlton, left Bendigo late on Monday for Melbourne with the loaded transport waggon. He was last seen in the vicinity of Kyneton, about half-way to Melbourne. A systematic search has proved fruitless. The police state that highwaymen have been operating on country roads and heavy losses of goods have been reported in recent months.
