TARANAKI RAILWAY URGED? The construction of rail ways, to brealj Auckland's isolation was a subject of much interest half a century ago. The following comment appeared in the New Zealand Herald of. October 15, 1887: • ' "A; proposal will be forwarded to tb& Gorernment by the Auckland-Chamber of Commerce urging the advisability of taking immediate steps to construct a branch line to Taranaki connecting, with the Maitf Trunk Railway, andthat the main trunk connection with Marion should be postponed until th» branch line in question has been.' com* pleted. There should be no difficulty, if united action is taken, in Retting: this connecting branch line vfitn"',Taranaki constructed by a company; precisely as the Wellington people obtained authority to construct the Manawata railway, which now gives them th» command of the West Coast trade. "It could have done with advantage at that time; but, oaring to a more accurate knowledge of the country, and the absence of the native difficulty, the line to Taranaki could be both' more rapidly and ' more cheaply con-' structed than it could have '
