MOVE FOR UNITY
LABOUR IN AMERICA RIVAL ORGANISATIONS CONFERENCE SUGGESTED (Received October 13, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 12 The committee for Industrial Organisation, at its conference at Atlantic City, unanimously decided to request the American Federation of Labour to meet its representatives in order to consider methods of bringing about th<» unity of the American Labour movement. The invitation was immediately sent to Denver, where the federation is holding a convention. It looked an informal intimation that a solution of the problem was not expected if the C.1.0. insisted on the acceptance of its radical industrial unionisation programme.
The president of the federation, Mr. William Green, in commenting on the invitation, said: "It smacks of insincerity and lacks good faith, but it will be submitted to our executive council." A telegram from Denver says the convention of the federation by an overwhelming majority yesterday carried a resolution empowering the executive council to expel the Unions of the C.1.0. Mr. Green said the federation would welcome the return of the members of the rank and file who did not want C.1.0. leaders.
