KAMO POST OFFICE
NEW BUILDING OPENED TOTAL COST OF £3OOO [bv telegraph—OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI, Monday • The official opening of the new post office at Kamo was performed this afternoon by Mr. J. G. Barclay, M.P., in the presence of a very large gathering. Mr. Murdoch Mclnnes, chairman of the Kamo Town Board, who presided, said tho first post office was opened in Kamo in May, 1877. He congratulated the district on . the erection of such a fine building. Mr. W. Jones, Mayor of Whangarei, and Mr. J. A. S. Mackay, chairman of the Whangarei County Council, also spoke, the former predicting that the present building would not be large enough 20 vears hence. Mr. W. G. Cooper, chief postmaster at Auckland, in congratulating the district on its progress, said that last year the Postal and Telegraph Departments had handled £236,000,000, and 143.000.000 letters. Mr. Barclay said tho Kamo Town Board was constituted in 18S4, and the first postmaster was Mr. A. McGregor, who took charge of the first post office in 1877. A money order and savings bank office was established at Kamo in 1881, and the post office building just vacated was built in 18S6. The new building cost £3OOO and includes an up-to-date six-roomed residence. The first letter in the new office was posted by Mrs. M. Mclnnes. The present postmaster is Mr. S. J. Peters After the ceremony the guests were entertained by the Kamo Town Board at afternoon tea.
