FORTRESS AT PENANG
GUARDING SEA STRAITS [MOM Ol'lt OWN COHKKSI'ONDKNT] SINGAPORE. Sent. 1 Significant developmental work is to be proceeded with at Penang, the island on the west coast of tho Malay Peninsula north of Singapore. Penang is destined to be a fortress for north Malaya, guarding the western approach to the Far East through the Straits of Malacca. The British Government lias recently acquired land on Penang Island for the erection of barracks and gun cm placement's. The general hospital at Penang is to be reconstructed and extended and the Penang aerodrome, which is certain ultimately to become a Royal Air Force station, is to have longer landing strips. A new hangar is to be built.
