NEW FARMERS' LEAGUE
SUPPORT FOR GUARANTEE CRITICISM OF THE UNION [by TELKGRAI-H —PItESR ASSOCIATION'] INVERCARGJLL. Monday Support for the guaranteed price for dairy produce and disapproval of the Farmers' Union was expressed at a meeting of farmers at Tussock Creek after an address by Mr. Norman MeIntyre, one of the conveners of a meeting at which he described the Farmers' Union as "a squatters' dictatorship." It was decided to form a farmers''cooperative league "in support of the guaranteed price for butter and cheese." There was an attendanco of 25 at the meeting, which was called "to discuss farmers' problems and the formation of an organisation that will express the opinion of working farmers." An assurance that so far as he was concerned the meeting had no political significance was given by Mr. MeIntyre, who spoke strongly in favour of the guaranteed price, claiming that the activities of the Farmers' Union were "calculated for political pur-* poses." Mr. Mclntyre criticised the Southland provincial executive of the Fanners' Union. "L condemn the Farmers' Union for the attitude it has taken up toward the Government," he continued. "This attitude will bo detrimental to the future welfare of the province. No Government will continue to help a province which gives no encouragement when the Government is doing its best." The first meeting of protest held in Invercargill about the guaranteed price for dairy produce had, Mr. Mclntyro said, misrepresented the opinion of the body of fanners. Scarcely one representative at the meeting had asked his suppliers whether they .were for or against the guaranteed price. Organisation plans were discussed ill committee after the meeting.
