DESTRUCTION BY FIRE —— • OVER 100 YEARS OLD FLAMES FROM BURNING CAR TWO WOMEN SUFFER SHOCK [BY TELEGRAPHI—OWN 1 —OWN CORRESPONDENT] RUSSELL, Tuesday" The first licensed hotel in New Zealand, the Northampton Castle, which was situated at Waitangi, -was destroyed by fire under unusual circumstances.
A car travelling from Paihia to Wliangarei caught fire, and the flames, spreading to gorse and scrub at tho side of the road, were fanned by a breeze until they reached the hotel, where they quickly gained a firm hold.
The occupants, Miss Anne and Miss Clara Press, aged 72 and 6o respectively,' were taken to tlie Kawakawa Hospital suffering from shock. Neither the hotel nor its contents were insured. The building, which was more than 100 years old, had many historical associations with the early days of New Zealand
