ART EXHIBITION

OPENING IN PUKEKOHE The second of tho series of travelling country exhibitions arranged by tho Auckland Society of Arts was opened in Pukekoho on Monday night by the president, Mr. R. O. Gross. The' collection consists of reproductions of works by old and modern masters, some being on loan from King's C'ollego, and tho others having been acquired by the society in London. When opening the exhibition, Air. Gross announced that the society had decided to amend its rules in order to allow country members to join at greatly reduced subscriptions. It was hoped that this would assist in encouraging country residents to take an active interest in art —although, Mr. Gross said, ho had already noticed country people generally wore more interested in cultural activities than townspeople. Because the knowledge of art was not regarded as vital, it had not received much attention, and many persons were so busy getting the necessities of life that they had failed to become acquainted with art at all. It was hoped that tho now leisure time being enjoyed by many would enable them to remedy this position.
