TRANSPORT STAFF
WORKING TO CAPACITY EXTRA MEN ENGAGED When an appeal for the employment of a number of painters was received by the Auckland Transport Board yesterday from tho placement officer, it was reported that the board had been responsible for absorbing 165 men in permanent positions at full rates of pay. A reply to this effect will be forwarded to tho" placement officer, adding that tho board is unable to engage more men at present. Tho appeal contained an inquiry whether it would bo possible for the board to undertake any painting work on any of its buildings or fences in order to create employment. Referring to this request, the Hon. F. E. Lark, M.L.C., said the board had reasonably met requests in the past, but it was not fair to find short-term employment for a few men. simply for tho sake of something to do. There was a danger of interference with the permanent staff. Tho whole idea was unbalanced. The munager, Mr. A. E. Ford, said the board was working at full capacity. The painting of trams was an all-time job, but it required skilled labour.
