MITCHELSON CUP
INTEREST QUICKENING ACCEPTANCES ON FRIDAY CATALOGUE UNLIKELY RUNNER The appearance of the weights for the Mitchelson Cup and other races on tho first day has caused a quickening of interest in the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting, to be hold at Ellerslio on October 9 and 11. Acceptances for the handicap events on tho first day and final payments for the Great Northern Guineas and tho Welcome Stakes fall due at 5 p.m. on Friday and discussions on the various races aro likely to become more animated when they appear.
It is practically certain that there will be a strong field in the Mitchelson Cup and the winner might not bo easy to find. Two of last year's placegetters, Scotland and Fersen, who wore second and third respectively, are again in tho field, Scotland with 101b. moro than he had on that occasion and Fersen with 31b. less. Scotland recontly won the Avondale Cup in improssivo fashion with 7.13 and should bo dangerous even though he is now up to 8.8, which is only 31b. moro than he carried into second place in tho Auckland Racing Club Handicap, 1J miles, last January. Tho recent form of Fersen has not been good, but he is improving with racing and is one of tho best stayers in the field, so that he should be running on when others aro tiring. Tho top-weight, Enge, has yet to prove his worth at a mile and a-half, but his fitness should assist him. Nevertheless, ho will not find it easy with 9.2. King Rey, Taitoru and Master Brierly. are good performers and they are on the same mark with S.lO. King Rey and Master Brierly are expected to race at Paeroa on Saturday, when a line on their present form should be obtained. Day Wind is handily placed at 7.8. Ho is also engaged on Saturday and a forward showing in the Taumarunui Cup should bring him into favour. At his last attempt over a mile aud a-half at Ellerslie, Day Wind carried 7.7 and was narrowly beaten by Gay Talkie, 7.13, in the H. 0. Nolan Handicap. There are many other possibilities among the light-weights, including Boomerang, Kiltowyn, Knight of Australia, Tybalt, Small Boy, Gay Rebel, Valmint and Cerne Abbas, who will have an opportunity to make amends for her defeat at Avondale. Kiltowyn is a good performer when fit and if ho maintains tho progress that he has been making he should not be long in winning.
A message from the Herald's "Wellington correspondent last evening stated that, although Catalogue was regarded by his connections as very reasonably weighted in the Mitchelson Cup, he would not make the trip unless present plans 'were altered. It was the intention to reserve him for Trentham and Riccarton.
RANDWICK MEETING FANCIES FOR HANDICAPS SILVER STANDARD PLEASES SYDNEY. Sept. 27 The dominance of Talking, Mala and Silver Standard is likely to cause comparatively small fields in the Epsom Handicap and the Metropolitan Handicap. The horses who are challenging are not likely to come up to expectations.
Gold Rod has pleased his trainer, G. Price, a little more lately, but Talking will monopolise all the attention in the Epsom. Prittle Prattle's failure at Rosehill is overlooked, and he is still regarded as having an Epsom chance. Silver Standard's Rosehill. win was so impressive that he is now regarded as, a possible conqueror of Mala. The Derby position is still interesting, although Hua has developed slight soreness, and is not galloping freely. Ajax and Avenger have done well. Courtcraft' satisfied his trainer, F. Davis, on Saturday, but should be a better horso in Melbourne.
WOTAN OFF COLOUR EFFECTS OF HARD RACE DAMALIS OUT OF TWO CUPS (.Received September 27, 9.45 p.m.) . MELBOURNE, Sept. 27 Last year's Melbourne Cup winner, Wotan, is feeling the effects of his severe race in the Tullamarine Handicap on Saturday and according to his trainer, J. Fryer, he is off his feed. The supporters of Damalis received a shock to-day when he was withdrawn from the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups. SAINT MUSK TO REAPPEAR ENGAGEMENT AT PAEROA
Although he has failed three times since scoring a dashing victory in the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at Tc Rapa in May, Saint Musk has not been disgraced and he may bo a good prospect for the Mn ram aril a Steeplechase a t Paeroa on Saturday. Saint .Musk is a bold fencer and should go well over the light country at Paeroa. He has not raced since competing unsuccessfully at the Great Northern meeting at Elierslie in June.
HACK CUP PROSPECT MALAGIGI AN IMPROVER The five-year-old Mnlngigi displayed definite improvement* when he finished strongly to win the New Lynn. Handicap, one mile, at Avondale recently and ho appears to have rosy prospects in the Hack Cup Handicap at Paeroa on Saturday. It was on the Paeroa course last March when Malpgigi first came into prominence by dead-heating with Bronzette in the first division of the Awaiti Handicap. Malagigi is a bay gelding by Paladin from Drop One and shapes as if he will stay well when his powers are fully developed. TROTTING FIXTURES Oclolier 2—Metliven Trotting Club.
