DEFENCE FORCES
RECRUITING CAMPAIGN ENROLMENTS AT OTAHUHU Recruiting for the coastal territorial defence forces was commenced in the Otahuhu district on Wednesday night, when a public meeting was held under tho auspices of the Territorial Association. Lieutenant-Colonel R. V. Closey* officer commanding the Waikato Regiment, attended. There was an attendance of about 30. The purposes of the meeting were outlined by Captain W. Murphy, of the permanent forces, who stated that it was desired to enrol recruits for the transport and machine gun sections for coastal defences on tho east coast extending as far as Maraetai. His suggestion that a local committee bo established to foster recruiting and to provide facilities for contact with young men eligible for service was adopted. The following were appointed: —Messrs. R. W. F. Wood, H. H. Hayr, 11. F. Hunter, A. Sinclair, and J. Simpson. In response to an appeal for recruits 10 young men enlisted.
